At 3:25 p.m. on Friday, July 3, the Village of Deerfield sent an e-news message headed "Family Days Fire Works Cancelled." It gave three reasons: severe weather, poor conditions at Shepard Park and vendor cancellations. The display was postponed, and the Village said it would set a fall date after talking with the Park District and the fireworks vendor. Earlier that afternoon the Daily Herald listed Deerfield in its roundup of suburban festivals and fireworks affected by the storms. It also warned that more rain could hit Saturday's events.
Seventy-eight days later, the make-up date was gone too. The second cancellation took much more with it than the first. The fall plan had loaded the downtown car show, Touch-a-Truck, the farmers market, Harvest Fest and the fireworks onto one Saturday at two sites. One storm forecast wiped out all of it. What Deerfield has left this fall is a different kind of calendar: small events, each with its own date and venue, run mostly by the Deerfield Park District, plus the market's final Saturdays on Park Avenue.
How one night became one Saturday, and then none
The 2026 sequence, in order:
- June 26. The Village's Family Days preview schedules Friday, July 3 at Shepard Park with music, food, drinks, children's activities and fireworks. Saturday, July 4 moves to Jewett Park. Deerfield Patch lists the fireworks for 9:15 p.m.
- July 3. The fireworks are postponed the afternoon of the show. The Village says all other Family Days events are still planned for July 4.
- July 16. At the Park District board meeting, Mayor Shapiro thanks the District for its work on Family Days. The minutes also record that the September Harvest Fest will include the canceled July 3 activities, fireworks among them.
- July 17. The Village names the date. The fireworks move to Harvest Fest at Shepard Park on Saturday, September 19, at 8:15 p.m.
- September 18. With thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in the forecast, the Village cancels the whole day, farmers market included. It says the fireworks will not be rescheduled in 2026.
The next scheduled fireworks show in Deerfield is now July 3, 2027, during Family Days. The Village calls it an "enhanced" show.
Part of the July holiday stayed on the schedule. The June 26 preview planned the noon parade to start at Deerspring Pool, head west on Deerfield Road and north on Waukegan Road, and end at Hazel Avenue and Park Avenue. It also listed the Rotary 5K, the Lions breakfast, a dog show, a bike parade and a pie-eating contest at Jewett Park. Patch's July guide added arts and crafts to that Jewett Park lineup. The July 3 notice said those Saturday events were still on as of that afternoon.
What September 19 was carrying
The make-up date carried far more than the fireworks. The Village's August 14 e-news laid out the day from early morning to late evening:
| Time | What was planned | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 7 a.m.–12:30 p.m. | Deerfield Farmers Market | Park Avenue |
| 9 a.m.–noon | Touch-a-Truck | At the market |
| 2–4 p.m. | Cruise into Harvest Fest Car Show with the Deerfield Lions Club, plus live music by Lost in Rockford | Downtown |
| 5–6 p.m. | County Line String Band | Shepard Park |
| 5–10 p.m. | Food trucks, beer and wine | Shepard Park |
| 6–8 p.m. | Bags tournament | Shepard Park |
| 6:30–8 p.m. | Roger That | Shepard Park |
| 8 p.m. | Flag raising by Deerfield American Legion Post 738, National Anthem, welcome from Mayor Shapiro | Shepard Park |
| 8:15 p.m. | Fireworks | Shepard Park |
| 8:45–10:45 p.m. | 90s Pop Nation | Shepard Park |
Downtown parking was set for the Downtown Deerfield Metra lots, the Lindemann lot and the Village lot. Pets, smoking and outside alcohol were not allowed at the event. That schedule made September 19 the busiest community day on Deerfield's 2026 calendar. It also meant one weather decision would settle everything at once.
The Village explained the decision in operational terms. The forecast created "significant safety, setup and operational concerns for the outdoor events."
"The fireworks display will not be rescheduled this year. Instead, the Village plans to present an enhanced fireworks show on July 3, 2027, during Family Days."
The market lost a Saturday, and its end date depends on which listing you read
The farmers market is the one piece of September 19 that comes back every week. According to Visit Lake County, the market has run since 1995 and has more than 25 vendors. It sets up on Park Avenue between Jewett Park Drive and Hazel Avenue, Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Its listed 2026 season runs from June 13 to October 24. Along with produce, the listing names prepared foods such as crepes, waffles, tamales, hummus bowls and coffee, as well as live music and kids' activities.
Published sources disagree on when the season ends. The events section on that same Visit Lake County page gives the run as June 13 to October 14. A statewide farmers market guide on Patch, posted in April and updated in May, lists Deerfield's market through October 11. Counting from today, September 30, October 3 and October 10 fall inside all three listings. October 17 and 24 appear only under the October 24 end date, so check with the Village of Deerfield before planning a morning around either one.
October, venue by venue
With Harvest Fest canceled and no fireworks until next July, the rest of the fall calendar is run mainly by the Deerfield Park District. Each event is small, has its own hours, and takes place somewhere different.
- Spooky Ceramics, Saturday, October 3, 10 a.m.–noon, at Jewett Park Community Center, 836 Jewett Park Drive. Jewett Park Drive is one end of the market's block of Park Avenue, so this one falls on a market morning, a short walk away.
- Bark in the Park, Saturday, October 10, 10 a.m.–noon, at Jaycee Park, 1026 Wilmot Road. Pets were not allowed at Harvest Fest, so this is the season's community event built around dogs.
- Halloween Hoopla Family Fun Fest, Friday, October 16, 5:30–7:30 p.m., at Sachs Recreation Center, 455 Lake Cook Road. The Park District lists a trick-or-treat trail and a DJ. Advance tickets are $15 per person.
- Trunk or Treat, Sunday, October 25, 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m., in the St. Gregory's Episcopal Church parking lot, 815 Wilmot Road. Candy is handed out from decorated vehicles.
That makes four events at four addresses, plus the market's remaining Saturdays on Park Avenue. Halloween Hoopla is the one evening event, and it closes at 7:30. Each lasts a few hours, so one bad forecast would cost a single morning or evening, not the whole season.
One indoor addition still in paperwork
One item that would add something to do year-round in Deerfield Square is still only a proposal. A Village memo dated September 4 describes a prefiling plan from Back Nine Golf. It would turn the former Gracie Barra space at 710 Robert York Avenue, Unit C, into a 2,554-square-foot indoor golf simulator facility with up to four simulators and 24-hour member access. A prefiling is the first look before formal review. The proposal has not been approved and has no opening date. For now it belongs on the list of things to watch, not things to book.
Until then, Deerfield's next fireworks date is July 3, 2027, the Family Days Friday, when the Village says the show will be enhanced.
The team at Jacqueline Lotzof follows Deerfield's calendar the same way we follow its blocks, through Village notices, Park District schedules and what actually happens on a given Saturday.
